Medicare Cost Report Resources

What is a Medicare Cost Report?

Medicare and Medicaid providers must submit a yearly cost report to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). The cost report details Medicare-certified provider information for various facilities, including Home Health Agencies (HHA), Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNF), and Hospice care.

As the CMS website notes: “The cost report contains provider information such as facility characteristics, utilization data, cost and charges by cost center (in total and for Medicare), Medicare settlement data, and financial statement data” (source).

For most facilities, cost reports are due five months after the fiscal year, and late filing may delay Medicare reimbursement.
